Will the Gourmet Cafe property soon be home to another suburban strip mall? Sure looks like it.

City officials will meet in closed session tonight (i.e., in private) with Westland Industries, a Long Beach-based real estate company that works in commercial leases and property acquisitions.

According to the agenda, city officials will negotiate "price and terms of payment" for property at 8250 Firestone Blvd., which is Gourmet Cafe.

LoopNet.com, a commercial real estate listing service, is advertising a new strip mall on the site. According to LoopNet, the "existing center will be completely transformed into a high-traffic food court. Westland Industries is working closely with the city of Downey to create the 'grand entrance' to Downey's downtown."

LoopNet has site plans and artist renderings, and advertises the property as "the first step to create the ideal pedestrian friendly downtown district."

No comment yet from city officials, Westland Industries, or Gourmet Cafe.

Gourmet Cafe is almost directly across the street from what will soon become Porto's Bakery, which is expected to break ground later this year. In fact, Porto's is already hiring employees for the Downey location.
